Jan Hagel (yan HAH-ghle) cookies are a traditional Dutch holiday sweet. They are very thin, light and flaky. They are also known as Hollanders, Janhagels, Janhagel Cookies, Dutch Almond Cookies or Sugar Hail Cookies....I know them as YUMMY!!!! My cousin introduced me to these cookies (darn her ;)
Jan Hagel Bars1/2 cup sugar
1 cup margarine
1/2 tsp almond extract
1 egg separated
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tblsp water
1/2 sliced almonds
Heat oven to 350. Grease cookie sheet. In large bowl combine 1/2 cup sugar, margarine, almond extract & egg yolk; blend well. Add flour and cinnamon; mix well. Press in Pan.
In small bowl, combine water & egg white. Beat until frothy. Brush over dough. Mix almonds & 1/4 cup sugar. Sprinkle evenly on top of dough.
Bake at 350 for 17 minutes. Cut into 3x1 bars.
